Well, I managed to survive the first day of my recently mentioned D&D 4th Edition campaign without any player deaths or threats against the DM, so I feel that we had a positive session. Seriously though, I am kind of glad we were missing a party member due to illness today. It gave all of us a chance to run through a practice encounter (thanks, Dungeon Delve) to get a feel for how 4E works in practice.
After a little hands-on time, I have to say that I am pretty positive about the new system. My players warmed up to it pretty quick, and I think it’s safe to say that their impression of the kobold race has not been at all improved by today’s activities.
I especially appreciate how easy it is for players to pick up the new system. To be fair, it may actually be easier for a brand new player to pick up 4E and assimilate it than for a long-time player, simply because the changes can be fairly dramatic. However, once I got into the groove, the session was smooth.
Kudos to Wizards of the Coast; I think you may have hit your target with 4E. We’ll see how it plays out down the road.
